The round spheres inside are spore packets, which are dispersed naturally when raindrops fall into the cups and splash them outward, helping the fungus spread.
With that explanation, the discovery took on new meaning. Birds’ nest mushrooms commonly grow in mulch, compost, and decaying organic material, especially in moist conditions. Their small size makes them easy to overlook, but once noticed, they are memorable. That moment in the garden served as a reminder that even familiar spaces are full of quiet, intricate life.
