Eight-year-old Clara Reed chose her father, Staff Sergeant Ben Reed, and his military working dog, Scout, for a school project about someone who helped others. Because her father was away on assignment, Clara interviewed him through video calls and carefully recorded information about his work with Scout, a Belgian Malinois. She also drew Scout and included details such as the small scar above his right ear.

During her presentation, Clara used specialized information she had learned from her father, including the term “passive alert.” Her teacher, Ms. Harrow, became uncertain that Clara had prepared the report herself and marked the project as unverified. Clara explained that she had written it with help from her mother and had her father check the facts, but the misunderstanding left her disappointed.

Clara’s mother contacted the school, while Ben arranged an authorized educational visit with Scout. The principal reviewed Clara’s original work and allowed her to present again beside her father. Ben explained the responsibilities of a military working dog handler, while Scout demonstrated a basic scent-detection exercise using an approved training aid. The students also had an opportunity to ask questions about Scout’s training, care, and partnership with his handler.

Afterward, Ms. Harrow apologized for not investigating Clara’s explanation more carefully. The experience taught Clara about preparation, communication, patience, and handling misunderstandings. Two years later, Scout retired from military service and the family was able to welcome him into their home permanently. Clara continued to care for him using the lessons her father had taught her. The blue folder remained a reminder of a school project that became an important family memory.
