The sign above my garage read CRAIG’S AUTO REPAIR, painted by my sons, Rick and Noah, when they were seven and four. Noah painted outside the lines, while Rick carefully finished the rest. I kept that imperfect sign because it reminded me why I worked so hard. After my wife Laura left me for wealthy car dealer Brent Harlow, she told me I was going nowhere. I lost my dealership job and eventually opened my own repair shop.

Laura often threatened to withhold our sons unless I helped her. One day, she brought me Brent’s damaged Mercedes for repairs. While inspecting it, I found a cracked booster seat and Noah’s toy dinosaur. The vehicle’s crash data showed it had been traveling 58 mph in a 35-mph zone with both boys inside. Rick eventually revealed that Brent had been drinking, crashed, and left the scene.

I contacted police and provided the damaged parts, crash information, and booster seat. Detective Ramirez connected the evidence to a hit-and-run report. Laura and Brent had hidden what happened and instructed Noah to give a false explanation for his injury. When they later signed a repair release without reading it, police used the information to seize the Mercedes and arrest Brent.

Brent faced charges, while Laura admitted knowing about the drinking. Family court awarded me primary custody. Years later, my business was thriving and my sons lived with me. When Rick asked why I had simply said “okay” during the dispute, I told him I had already decided what mattered. Looking at the old sign, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be—with my sons. That was home.
