When I visited Mr. Delgado after Marguerite’s passing, he handed me a wooden box containing a silver locket with the gummy ring I had given her in April. Beneath it was a letter explaining that I would receive no money from her estate, but she had arranged something more meaningful. He then played a recording she had prepared.

In the video, Marguerite explained that her decisions were voluntary and properly documented, with a doctor and court reporter present. She remembered my dream of becoming a nurse and the financial difficulties threatening my education. Two months before her passing, she had secretly paid my remaining university tuition and purchased my textbooks.

Marguerite wanted nothing in return. She simply encouraged me to complete my education and extend kindness to others. I watched her recording three times, overwhelmed by gratitude. Although her family never apologized and eventually stopped communicating with me, her message helped me accept that I could not control their assumptions.

I continued working at the hospice while attending nursing classes, remembering her encouragement during exhausting days. My graduation is scheduled for next May, and I carry her locket beneath my scrubs. Her generosity taught me that compassion often begins with listening and offering practical support. By caring for patients and comforting their families, I hope to honor her greatest gift: the opportunity to build a meaningful future.
