My nineteen-year-old son, Weston, died rescuing a seven-year-old girl named Sloane from a powerful river current. He had been preparing to leave for college and promised to return home for dinner. At his funeral, Sloane appeared carrying a green book but was too overwhelmed to speak. Her family later moved away, and we lost contact.

Eighteen years later, Sloane appeared at my door with her young son, Charlie, and the same book. She revealed that Weston had volunteered at her reading program and patiently helped her learn. On the day of the accident, he had arranged to meet her at the riverside park so she could finish reading her favorite story aloud.

Inside the book, Weston had written a personal dedication asking Sloane to save the final page for him. She explained that she had slipped into the river while retrieving something near the water. Now a reading specialist, she helped struggling children with the same patience Weston had shown her.

Sloane admitted feeling guilty about surviving, but I reassured her that Weston would have wanted her to live happily. We later visited their old reading bench. Weeks afterward, Charlie read from the green book while we patiently encouraged him. When he called me Grandma Demi, I smiled and turned the page, grateful that Weston’s kindness continued through another generation.
