For two months, my sixteen-year-old son Nathan claimed he was spending weekends with his best friend Cole. One Saturday evening, Cole’s mother, Denise, called and revealed that neither boy had been staying where we believed. Their unanswered phones frightened us, and we contacted the police after searching unsuccessfully.

Hours later, my late husband’s father, Frank, called to explain that both boys were safe at his workshop. Nathan had secretly been helping his grandfather preserve belongings left by his father, Michael, who died three years earlier. Frank was selling his house, and Nathan feared losing the memories connected to his dad.

When I visited the workshop, I discovered that Nathan and Cole had completed a wooden rocking chair Michael started building before Nathan was born. I realized that my reluctance to discuss Michael’s belongings had prevented Nathan from learning more about his father. Although everyone apologized for the secrecy, we agreed that honesty and clear communication were essential.

Together, we preserved photographs, tools, and meaningful keepsakes before Frank moved. Nathan also apologized to Cole for involving him in the secret. The completed rocking chair eventually found a place in our living room. More importantly, Nathan and I began sharing memories of Michael openly, discovering that remembering someone we loved could bring comfort alongside sadness.
