White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt discussed media access and presidential communication with Axios co-founder Mike Allen. Allen questioned whether changes to traditional press arrangements

could affect historical documentation, referencing Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci’s photograph of Donald Trump following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Leavitt defended the administration’s policies, arguing that expanding access would allow more media organizations to cover presidential activities. She noted that thousands of journalists hold White House

credentials, while relatively few regularly accompany the president. She maintained that established outlets should not automatically receive priority and that journalists continued reporting on administration activities.

Allen cited concerns from the White House Correspondents’ Association about independent journalism and government influence over press access. Leavitt responded that the association should not

exclusively determine which journalists enter the Oval Office or travel aboard Air Force One. She rejected claims of political favoritism, emphasizing broader participation across different perspectives and the growing importance of digital media platforms.

The conversation also examined presidential media availability. An Axios report compared Joe Biden’s 164 press appearances with Donald Trump’s 468, George W. Bush’s 248, and Ronald Reagan’s 262,

although counting methods may vary. Ultimately, the discussion highlighted competing priorities: expanding media participation while protecting independent reporting, transparency, and the historical record of presidential activities.
