For weeks, the sound of a crying baby in the hallway outside her apartment kept one woman awake at night. Already dealing with a chronic illness, she became increasingly exhausted despite trying earplugs, headphones, and white noise. One night at 2 a.m., overwhelmed by frustration, she wrote a note telling the baby’s mother to keep the noise inside. She walked toward the door, ready to leave it there, but then heard the mother quietly saying that she was trying.

Months later, the baby smiled whenever she saw her neighbor, while her mother slowly rebuilt her life. One evening, she gave the woman a photograph of her daughter and thanked her for being the first person to knock instead of walking away. Looking at the picture, the woman remembered the note she had almost delivered. She realized compassion does not always mean solving someone’s problems. Sometimes, it simply means reaching out, offering support, and choosing to stay.
