Letter from 9/11 Flight Attendant Reaches Her Son 24 Years Later

Posted on September 12, 2026 By admin

A letter believed lost for more than two decades unexpectedly returned to the family of Cee Cee Ross Lyles, a mother remembered as a hero of September 11. The handwritten note, preserved by a kindergarten teacher, was eventually delivered to her son, Jevon Castrillo. Its discovery offered something more personal than a historical reminder: a final glimpse of a mother’s love and pride for the little boy she had left behind.

When Jevon received the worn paper, he discovered that the message was not about tragedy, airplanes, or the events of 9/11. Instead, it described how proudly Cee Cee felt after her son read a library book from beginning to end. She had been so impressed that she shared the achievement with his teacher. Through those simple words, her warmth, encouragement, and devotion became present again.

The teacher had quietly protected the letter through four moves, honoring a promise to keep it safe. A journalist later helped complete the journey, bringing the note to Jevon during a video call. Memories, photographs, and emotional conversation connected the past with the present as he read his mother’s words through tears.

Now a father himself, Jevon has spent years knowing his mother primarily through the way others remembered her. The letter allowed him to see another side of her—not only as a woman associated with courage and sacrifice, but as a loving parent who celebrated her child. In those few handwritten lines, he found a lasting message: his mother was, and remains, proud of him.
