For eleven years, my mother had barely hummed a tune since my father died. Then Richard entered her life through a community gardening club, and she began wearing perfume, buying new clothes, and laughing again. He was kind to her, brought flowers, and even repaired her porch railing. Still, I became concerned about one unusual habit: every Sunday, Richard left at exactly 7:30. His explanations varied, and my daughter Chloe noticed the pattern too. When I asked Mom if she had ever visited his home, she admitted she had not, but asked me to let her have the chance to hope.
On Mom’s 72nd birthday, Richard stayed through dinner and brought roses, but at 7:26 he checked his watch. Mom asked him to remain for dessert, yet he apologized and left. Chloe followed him later and returned with his leather bag. Inside were photographs, a music box, and picture cards intended for someone experiencing memory difficulties. She also found a note that read, “My name is Evelyn. Richard is my son.”
We soon learned that Richard had been leaving early to visit his 86-year-old mother at a memory-care facility. Evelyn had dementia and often became frightened in the evenings, sometimes forgetting who her son was. Richard had kept her situation private after a previous relationship ended because his partner could not accept the responsibility involved in caring for her.
