Demond Wilson, best known for portraying Lamont Sanford on the classic sitcom Sanford and Son, has died at age 79. Born Grady Demond Wilson on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia, he grew up in New York City and developed an interest in performing at an early age. As a child, he appeared on Broadway and performed at the Apollo Theater, gaining valuable experience in dance and theater.
Wilson reached a wider television audience in 1972 when he was cast as Lamont Sanford, the son of Fred Sanford, played by Redd Foxx. His calm and practical style complemented Foxx’s energetic comedy, helping make the series a major success during its six-season run. Although Lamont became his most recognized role, Wilson continued acting afterward, appearing in television productions including Baby… I’m Back! and The New Odd Couple, as well as film and later television projects.
During the 1980s, Wilson became an ordained minister and stepped away from entertainment for a period to focus on ministry, writing, family, and community work. He later returned to acting occasionally and also wrote books reflecting on his experiences. Outside his professional life, Wilson and his wife, Cicely, raised six children.
Wilson died on January 30, 2026, at his home in the Palm Springs area of California. His longtime publicist confirmed his death, with reports attributing it to complications related to cancer. While audiences will continue to remember him as Lamont Sanford, his legacy also includes his work as an actor, author, minister, husband, and father.
