The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning socialism by a 285–98 vote ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The measure expresses congressional opposition to socialism and socialist policies. Eighty-six Democrats reportedly joined Republicans, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party.
Republican Representative French Hill of Arkansas supported the resolution, describing it as a statement opposing socialism in all forms. New York Republican Nicole Malliotakis referenced her family’s experiences with Cuba’s government. Democrat Tom Suozzi has also distinguished his political positions from democratic-socialist platforms.
Progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opposed the measure, reflecting disagreements between progressive and more moderate Democrats. The debate also involved New York political figures, including Zohran Mamdani. Meanwhile, progressive challengers such as Saikat Chakrabarti have criticized Democratic Party leadership while pursuing congressional campaigns.
Republicans interpreted the bipartisan vote as support for market-oriented economic policies, domestic energy production, and reduced regulation. The resolution also highlighted broader debates about economic policy and party direction. However, a House resolution expressing a position does not itself establish new economic laws. Its significance should be understood through the official legislative text, recorded votes, and subsequent congressional actions.
