Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, died following an accident during a Saturday evening religious service on October 17 at the Church of Perpetual Relief in Guayaquil, Ecuador. While addressing his congregation, a large crucifix reportedly detached from the wall behind him and struck his head.
Moments before the incident, Sánchez had been reflecting on mortality and the importance of spending meaningful time with God and loved ones. The service was being livestreamed when the crucifix fell, causing alarm among worshippers. Congregation members rushed to assist the priest, while emergency responders were called to the church.
Despite efforts to revive him, Sánchez could not be saved. Ecuador’s National Police reportedly classified the incident preliminarily as an accident involving a severe head injury. However, legal experts cited by El Comercio suggested investigators should consider whether negligence contributed to the circumstances surrounding his death.
The priest’s family has requested a thorough investigation into how the crucifix became detached and whether anyone bears responsibility. Relative Patricio León acknowledged the family’s faith while emphasizing the need for answers. Questions remain about the cross’s installation, maintenance, and structural security. As loved ones mourn Sánchez, they hope investigators can establish what happened and determine whether the accident could have been prevented.
