After 31 years of marriage, Carol Delaney discovered messages suggesting that her husband, Mark, was secretly involved with Jenna, their son Daniel’s wife. Carol followed them to a hotel and recorded evidence of their meeting. She then contacted Daniel, an emergency nurse, and arranged to meet him at his grandfather’s grave.
Together, they opened a sealed envelope left by Carol’s late father, Joe Brennan. His letter revealed that Mark had betrayed Carol before their wedding. To protect his daughter and grandson, Joe had placed Brennan Lumber & Supply, the family home, and other assets into a trust, leaving Mark responsible for managing the company without owning it.
Further messages suggested that Mark and Jenna intended to transfer the trust’s assets before leaving town. Attorney Ruth Feldman confirmed Carol’s authority as trustee and advised her against signing the documents. At the company’s anniversary celebration, Carol announced that Mark would no longer serve as president and appointed longtime employee Luis Ortega as interim leader.
Carol and Daniel pursued legal guidance regarding their marriages. Although Mark challenged the trust arrangements, the business continued operating. A year later, Carol recognized that her father’s greatest gift was the knowledge and protection needed to make independent decisions with dignity, honesty, and confidence.
