Former San Francisco Police Department Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, was found dead alongside her daughter Katie, 24, and husband Kevin Mannix, 68, at a Marin County residence on Sunday evening. Deputies responded following reports of gunfire, and authorities are investigating the deaths as a suspected murder-suicide.
Ann dedicated decades to law enforcement, becoming the first woman to join and lead the department’s SWAT team. She was appointed deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau in 2018 and later led the Special Operations Bureau in 2019. Her husband, Kevin, retired in June 2018 after 27 years of police service.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association expressed deep sadness over the family’s deaths, recognizing Ann’s pioneering achievements and Kevin’s longstanding service. Police Chief Derrick Lew informed department employees and reminded them that emotional support resources were available. Mayor Daniel Lurie also offered condolences, honoring Ann’s contributions to San Francisco. A longtime friend described the loss as deeply painful.
Authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and the investigation’s findings remain pending. The tragedy has affected relatives, friends, former colleagues, and the wider law enforcement community.
