Four months after welcoming my daughter, I was exhausted from caring for her almost entirely alone. When my favorite dress no longer fit, my husband, Ryan, criticized my appearance and threatened to leave. Hurt by his words, I began walking with my baby, exercising, and eating healthier, hoping my transformation would restore his affection.
As I gradually lost weight, Ryan became increasingly distant, working late and protecting his phone. At his company party, I wore a beautiful green dress and received numerous compliments. Ryan appeared proud, but I noticed his coworker Hannah behaving strangely. Days later, she contacted me and revealed they had been having an affair for six months.
Hannah explained that Ryan had portrayed our marriage as nearly finished and blamed my appearance. Rather than arguing, we compared messages, dates, and receipts. I then arranged a romantic evening at the hotel where Ryan and I had spent our wedding night. During dinner, he praised my transformation and claimed his criticism had motivated me.
I handed him a black gift box containing divorce papers and evidence of his meetings with Hannah. When she appeared beside our table, Ryan realized we knew everything. I told him I had changed, but no longer for him. Walking away, I looked at my sleeping daughter’s photograph and understood that independence was better than remaining in a relationship that diminished my confidence.
