A dramatic satellite image circulating online claims that Hurricane Melissa is forming as a Category 5 storm in October 2026. However, the image refers to a powerful hurricane from October 2025, not a new weather emergency. According to the National Hurricane Center’s October 30, 2026 update cited in the report, no active Atlantic tropical cyclones were present.
Hurricane Melissa reached Category 5 intensity in 2025, with sustained winds estimated at 185 mph and a minimum central pressure of 892 millibars. Exceptionally warm ocean waters, substantial ocean heat content, and low wind shear supported its rapid intensification. The storm brought destructive winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, and storm surge to Caribbean communities.
Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, 2025, causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and essential services. Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas, and surrounding areas also experienced impacts. The storm was associated with 95 fatalities, according to the report. In March 2026, the World Meteorological Organization retired the name Melissa, replacing it with Molly.
The hurricane’s history emphasizes the importance of emergency preparation, evacuation planning, and reliable weather information. Residents should monitor official forecasts, maintain essential supplies, and follow local safety instructions. Old satellite images presented as breaking news can create unnecessary confusion, making accurate dates and verified updates especially important.
