Susan Saint James, born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles in 1946, became a familiar face on American television through The Name of the Game, McMillan & Wife, and Kate & Allie. Raised in Rockford, Illinois, she began modeling before pursuing acting. Her breakthrough performance earned her an Emmy Award in 1969.
Her portrayal of Sally McMillan alongside Rock Hudson brought widespread recognition, while Kate & Allie showcased her comedic talent through stories about friendship and parenting. Despite her successful career, Saint James gradually prioritized family life. In a 1993 interview, she explained that her children deserved greater attention as they grew older.
After meeting television producer Dick Ebersol during Saturday Night Live in 1981, they married and raised three sons, Charles, William, and Teddy. She also had two children, Sunshine and Harmony, from an earlier marriage. In November 2004, the family experienced tragedy when a plane crash in Colorado claimed fourteen-year-old Teddy’s life. Ebersol and Charles survived with serious injuries.
Beyond acting, Saint James supported Special Olympics and other charitable initiatives. In August 2026, she celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by loved ones.
