Ron Moeller, deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategic readiness, announced his departure from the Trump administration. His resignation follows approximately one year of service at the Pentagon.
Moeller explained that his decision reflected a personal commitment established before accepting the position. His resignation will take effect in two weeks, allowing him to return home.
He acknowledged the difficulty of spending another year away from his wife. Moeller plans to return to the Black Hills, reconnect with family, and enjoy the winter.
His professional background includes service with the United States Air Force during the 1970s. He subsequently joined the CIA, completing intelligence assignments before retiring from the agency in 2013.
At the Pentagon, Moeller worked under Anthony Tata on responsibilities involving strategic readiness. His experience supported departmental efforts related to military preparation, personnel development, and national security.
Moeller expressed appreciation for his government service while declining future discussions about private professional matters. He emphasized that his departure was planned rather than prompted by public disagreements.
Separately, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected speculation concerning a potential presidential campaign. Pentagon representatives confirmed that his attention remained focused on leading the Department of Defense.
Hegseth criticized reports relying on anonymous sources, distinguishing those claims from his current responsibilities. Moeller’s departure highlights the personal considerations accompanying demanding government positions and extended family separations.
