Clinical Features and Management of Sweet Syndrome: A Case Report

Posted on April 14, 2026 By admin

A patient presented with a sudden onset of painful red skin lesions on the face and neck and was urgently referred to a dermatology specialist following initial clinical assessment. A recently started medication was stopped due to suspicion of a possible drug-related reaction.

Further evaluation included a skin biopsy, complete blood count, and serological testing for antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, and other inflammatory markers. Oral corticosteroid therapy was started to help control symptoms and reduce inflammation.

Within 48 hours of treatment, the patient showed significant improvement, with a clear reduction in skin lesions and relief from pain. Laboratory results indicated leukocytosis with neutrophilia, along with positive antibodies and lupus anticoagulant, while routine serological tests showed no significant abnormalities.

Skin biopsy results later confirmed the diagnosis of Sweet syndrome, a rare inflammatory skin condition characterized by sudden painful red or raised lesions caused by neutrophil accumulation in the skin. The condition may be associated with infections, underlying diseases, or certain medications. Treatment typically involves corticosteroids, which often lead to rapid improvement. Careful evaluation is important to distinguish it from other similar skin conditions and ensure appropriate management.
