For many years, vehicle gear systems followed simple and recognizable patterns that most drivers quickly learned to understand. Manual transmissions commonly displayed numbered gears along with “R” for reverse, while automatic vehicles typically used “P” for park, “N” for neutral, “D” for drive, and “R” for reverse. Drivers often used this setting during highway travel or steady-speed driving, especially during periods when fuel conservation became increasingly important.
Although dedicated Economy gear settings are less common today, the concept remains an important part of automotive innovation. Modern vehicles now use advanced computer systems that automatically manage fuel efficiency, engine performance, and driving conditions in real time. The old “E” setting serves as a reminder of how vehicle technology has evolved over the years, moving from simple manual controls to highly sophisticated efficiency systems designed to improve everyday driving.
