Head lice are a common concern for many families and can cause noticeable discomfort at home. These small insects often spread in group settings such as schools through close contact or shared personal belongings. Managing them requires time, care, and consistency, which can feel overwhelming for parents and caregivers.
Lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They produce eggs known as nits, which attach close to the hair roots and are often challenging to remove. Although lice are not known to transmit illness, they can cause persistent itching and irritation. They may also survive away from the scalp for a short period, so proper cleaning is important.
Treatment usually starts with a specially formulated shampoo or lotion intended for lice removal. It is important to follow the usage instructions carefully, including application method and timing. These treatments are designed to eliminate active lice, but they do not always remove nits, which must be addressed separately. A fine-toothed comb used on damp hair helps remove remaining lice and nits.
Hair should be divided into small sections during combing, cleaning the comb after each stroke. A follow-up treatment is recommended after 7 to 10 days to address newly hatched lice. Household care is also necessary, including washing clothing, bedding, and hair accessories in hot water. Items that cannot be washed should be stored in sealed bags for two weeks. Regular scalp checks and avoiding shared personal items can help reduce the chance of recurrence.
