Why You Should Stop Ordering Lemon Water At Restaurants

Posted on September 3, 2026 By admin

A lemon wedge may look harmless and refreshing floating in a drink, often giving the impression of cleanliness and freshness. However, before reaching your glass, that small slice may pass through delivery containers, kitchen counters, cutting boards, knives, and human hands. Unlike cooked food, the lemon is not exposed to heat that could reduce bacteria. It is served raw and is often prepared in batches during busy restaurant hours, creating several opportunities for contamination.

Studies examining lemon slices served in restaurants have found bacteria on some of them. This does not mean lemons themselves are unsafe or that every slice carries harmful bacteria. The greater concern is usually how the fruit is handled and prepared. A rushed rinse, a reused cutting tool, contaminated surface, or unwashed hands can transfer microorganisms onto the lemon without anything looking obviously wrong.

For most people, consuming a lemon wedge does not result in illness, and many restaurants maintain appropriate food-safety practices. Nevertheless, contamination can occur, particularly when hygiene procedures are not followed carefully during busy periods. People with certain health vulnerabilities may also face greater consequences from foodborne infections, making careful handling especially important.

If you prefer to avoid the uncertainty, simply asking for your drink without a lemon is an easy option. At home, you have much more control over preparation. Wash the whole fruit thoroughly under running water, use clean utensils and cutting surfaces, and handle the slices with clean hands. A lemon wedge may seem like a tiny detail, but good food hygiene can make enjoying it safer and more reassuring.
