For almost three years, Daniel and I had hoped to adopt a child, but repeated interviews, paperwork, and disappointments had taught me to be careful with hope. Over time, Ava became happier and more confident, filling our home with opinions, laughter, drawings, and memories. She created a picture of the three of us and labeled it “MY FAMILY.” We never tried to replace Marie or erase Ava’s past. Instead, we gave those memories a safe place alongside her new life. The hidden box contained money and photographs, but its greatest gift was proof that Ava had always been loved.
