At first glance, these dark berries may resemble blackberries, but their elongated shape, rounded segments, and small green stems identify them as mulberries. Depending on their variety and ripeness, they may appear red, deep purple, or almost black. Their rich coloring comes largely from natural plant pigments called anthocyanins. Mulberries grow on trees belonging to the Morus genus, unlike blackberries, which grow on brambles.
When ripe, mulberries are sweet, juicy, soft, and delicate. Each berry is actually made up of many small fruit segments. They provide dietary fiber, which supports digestion and may help with fullness, along with vitamin C, potassium, and other nutrients. Eating the whole fruit instead of drinking juice preserves its fiber and makes it easier to include in a balanced diet.
Their dark color is also linked to polyphenols, including anthocyanins, which have attracted scientific interest for their antioxidant activity. However, mulberries are not miracle foods and cannot cure or prevent disease. Fresh berries make a naturally sweet snack with yogurt, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, or other fruit. Dried mulberries are convenient, but their sugars and calories become more concentrated, and some packaged varieties contain added sugar.
Mulberry leaves are traditionally used for tea, although leaf products should not replace medical treatment, especially for people taking blood-sugar medication. Fresh berries spoil quickly, so refrigerate them, wash them just before eating, and remove damaged fruit. For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer before transferring them to a freezer bag.
