A news helicopter carrying a pilot and an aerial photojournalist crashed in Los Angeles while covering the aftermath of a serious traffic collision. The aircraft, identified as NewsChopper 4, had been operating over Chatsworth during coverage of a Metro bus collision when contact was lost. The crew members were aerial photojournalist Eliana “Eli” Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. The helicopter went down near a self-storage facility, resulting in multiple fatalities, including both people aboard.
Moreno was an experienced aerial journalist who spent years working in television news, including with NBC4 and Telemundo 52. She was known for documenting breaking events from the air across Southern California. Marciniw was also an experienced aviation professional whose career included helicopter operations, flight instruction, aerial filming, aircraft management, and other aviation-related work. The crash was especially difficult for colleagues because the crew had been performing the type of work they regularly handled during major emergencies and developing stories.
A witness later recalled seeing the helicopter appear to have difficulty maintaining its normal flight path. Video footage showed the aircraft descending before the recording ended, while a brief exchange from inside the helicopter also circulated online. Some aviation observers offered possible interpretations of sounds heard in the recording, including a possible mechanical or flight-related warning. However, the audio and video alone cannot establish what caused the aircraft to lose altitude or why the flight ended.
The National Transportation Safety Board is examining the crash, with the Federal Aviation Administration also involved. Investigators are expected to review maintenance records, operating history, aircraft systems, flight information, witness accounts, weather conditions, and other evidence. Aviation investigations can take considerable time as officials separate confirmed facts from early observations and speculation. Until the examination is complete, explanations based only on the available recording should be considered possibilities rather than confirmed causes.
