His breakthrough role came with Police Woman, where he portrayed undercover detective Joe Styles alongside Angie Dickinson. The series aired from 1974 to 1978 and became widely recognized, with Bernard appearing in 90 episodes and contributing to its success during that era of television.
He later earned recognition for his role as Principal Jim Willis in The White Shadow, a show that explored social themes through sports and education.
