The Real Purpose of the Big Red Spheres Outside Target Stores

Posted on August 9, 2026 By admin

If you have visited a Target store, you have probably noticed the large red concrete spheres near the entrance.

Many shoppers see them as decorative features, photo spots, or places where children can sit and play. However,

their main purpose is practical: they are designed to provide an additional layer of protection around the store entrance.

The spheres function as protective barriers, similar to bollards found outside many buildings. Target uses large, highly visible concrete spheres to create separation between vehicles and pedestrians.

If a driver accidentally loses control of a vehicle or makes a driving error, the barriers can help prevent the vehicle from reaching the entrance, customers, or the building.

Their rounded shape also makes them easy to notice while avoiding the sharp corners found on some traditional barriers. Because the spheres are made from heavy concrete,

they are designed to remain firmly positioned in the parking area. Their simple appearance allows them to provide a safety function without making the entrance look overly industrial.

The bright red color also connects the spheres to Target’s recognizable branding and bullseye logo. This gives the store

entrances a consistent visual identity while making the barriers easy to recognize from a distance. Over time, they have become one of the retailer’s most familiar design elements.

The spheres have also become part of the shopping experience. Families sometimes use them as meeting points, children may sit on them while waiting,

and visitors often include them in photographs. Some locations have even incorporated seasonal decorations around the entrance.

Similar protective barriers are used at airports, stadiums, shopping centers, and other public locations, although Target’s red spheres are particularly recognizable because of their distinctive design.

Ultimately, Target’s red concrete spheres combine safety, visibility, and branding. What may appear to be a simple decorative feature serves a practical purpose while also contributing to the company’s familiar visual identity.
