Rachel’s message arrived one evening: “Don’t contact me. Please.” The words were surprising because she had enjoyed dinner with my widowed father the previous night. When I visited her apartment,
she eventually showed me an anonymous message warning her to stay away from him. The sender had also included a photograph of Rachel leaving the restaurant and knew private details about her family.
At that moment, I began to question whether the six women who had stopped contacting my father after their dates had actually chosen to leave.
My father had lost my mother twelve years earlier and had avoided relationships for most of that time. When he finally created a dating profile, he began meeting several kind and interesting women.
However, after each promising date, the women suddenly blocked him or disappeared without explanation. After the sixth occurrence, he began blaming himself and withdrawing again.
I asked Rachel to meet him because I wanted an honest opinion about whether he was unknowingly making these women uncomfortable.
She told me that he had been kind, respectful, and enjoyable to talk with, making her later experience even more concerning.
When we showed my father the messages, he was surprised and suggested contacting the police. His phone contained nothing suspicious, but his home-security footage showed a person entering his driveway shortly after Rachel’s date. The person’s face was hidden, but the shoes looked familiar. An old family photograph suggested that the person was my mother’s younger sister, Sabrina. Rachel also remembered that Sabrina knew private information about her family. When confronted, Sabrina admitted that she had been monitoring the women my father met and contacting them anonymously because she believed she was protecting my mother’s memory.
Sabrina had followed the women, researched them online, and sent messages containing personal information that encouraged them to stop communicating with my father.
Rachel preserved the messages and photographs and reported the situation, while my father provided the security footage. Sabrina eventually accepted responsibility and entered
counseling as part of the legal process. My father initially felt that dating again had caused the problem, but I reminded him that someone else’s actions were not his fault.
After several months, he began seeing another woman named Jocelyn. Their relationship developed gradually, and eventually his home was filled with laughter again.
For the first time in many years, he was beginning to move forward while still honoring the memory of my mother.
