Twelve years ago, my father lost my mother. Before her death, he was cheerful, always singing, joking, and filling our home with life. Afterward, everything changed.
He stopped dating and devoted himself to me. When I once told him Mom would never want him to spend his life alone, he simply smiled and said, “I am not alone. I have you.”
Years later, he created a dating profile. At first, I was happy to see him hopeful again. He met several women, and every date seemed to go well. Yet each woman stopped responding the next morning.
After six similar experiences, my father began wondering if something was wrong with him. I decided to find out why. My friend Rachel agreed to go on a date with him.
They had a wonderful evening, but the next day, Rachel received anonymous messages warning her to stay away from my father. Someone was watching her.
My father helped me check his security cameras. We saw a hooded person near his home after the date. I recognized the person’s distinctive shoes and suspected my aunt Sabrina,
my mother’s sister. When confronted, Sabrina admitted she had been monitoring my father’s dates and anonymously frightening the women.
She believed she was protecting my mother’s memory and preventing my father from moving on.
Her actions deeply hurt innocent people, and she eventually accepted responsibility. My father blamed himself for trying to date again, but I told him,
“You should have started living sooner.” Months later, he met Jocelyn. They continued seeing each other, and my father became happy again.
He finally understood that loving and remembering my mother did not mean giving up the rest of his life. The past deserved respect, but the future deserved a chance too.
