The complaints began quietly before becoming more direct. He would sit at the same window table for nearly three hours. Some customers believed he was taking up valuable space and wanted him to leave. Eventually, I learned that Elias was grieving Margaret, the woman he had shared his life with. Green, he explained, had been her favorite color, and that particular day would have been her birthday. He spoke about it almost apologetically, as though his sadness were something he needed to justify. While some customers judged his value by how much money he spent, Elias was simply trying to find somewhere that made his empty home feel less lonely.
The tension reached a turning point when a regular customer demanded that I do something about the “old man” occupying the window table. I looked toward Elias, quietly tracing the rim of his coffee cup, and realized the decision was about more than business. It was about what kind of café, and what kind of person, I wanted to be.
