Layan Mahmoud, a 19-year-old environmental science student, disappeared during a mountain research trip after promising her father she would return before sunset. Extensive searches found no answers, although a mysterious wooden owl raised questions.
Three years later, cave explorers discovered Layan inside a remote underground chamber alongside an elderly man named Imran, who claimed he had rescued her following an accident.
Layan explained that unstable ground had collapsed beneath her while photographing plants. Injured and without phone reception, she became trapped until Imran discovered her and provided food, water, shelter, and assistance.
Although Imran helped her survive, he never contacted authorities. He cited dangerous passages and Layan’s increasing fear of leaving the cave. Investigators later questioned his decisions.
Rescue workers carefully guided Layan outside and arranged medical attention. Her father, Mahmoud, received an unexpected telephone call confirming she was alive, leading to an emotional hospital reunion.
Returning home required patience. Layan struggled with unfamiliar surroundings but gradually regained confidence through photography, nature, and support from her father.
She eventually resumed university studies, focusing on environmental research and outdoor safety. Nearly a year later, she revisited the mountains and discovered another carved owl bearing an encouraging message from Imran.
Recognizing both his assistance and his mistakes, Layan chose not to revisit the cave. Instead, she returned home with her father, determined to rebuild her future.
