To DIY or Not to DIY: 4 Home Projects That Don’t Make Sense

When it comes to home projects, there are certain things that make more sense to do yourself. Sometimes there is great financial incentive, sometimes it is the ability to just let it do exactly how you like it, or the sheer satisfaction of a job well done.

On the other hand, some things are just a nightmare. Maybe you see an opportunity to save some money. Next, you know that you are only a quarter of the job and already realize that you are there path over your head.

Have no fear. Here’s a guide to help you figure out when to make yourself and when to call an expert.

DO: paint your house

Painting the interior of your home is something almost anyone can do. Accepted Savings at stake – Hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars – it’s probably worth it. The sacrifice you make comes in the form of time and chaos, but that should only be an issue in the beginning. Anyone who has tried usually understands it pretty well. The finished product may not look as perfect as a professional, but if you take the time to prepare and add an extra layer, the results will be very similar.

NOT: electrical wiring

Becoming an electrician takes a lot of time and a lot of learning. Nobody should understand this when watching a few YouTube videos. One wrong step and you can set yourself on fire in the hospital or in the house. This is electricity – don’t play around. Call a trained specialist.

DO: Home security

Home security, especially video surveillance, is growing in popularity. One factor is cost and another is simplicity. Today, modern home security camera systems can be ordered online and quickly installed by a homeowner. The instructions are easy to follow and there are a lot of helpful videos on YouTube that you can watch if you encounter any minor issues. Honestly, installing a home security camera system is a breeze compared to assembling Ikea furniture.

NOT: Change your oil

This is just a mess waiting to be passed. Sure, you can save a few dollars by changing your own oil, and some people are really proud to work on their own car. But do you really want to roll around on the floor and cover yourself with dirt – maybe cut yourself into sharp metal – just to do something that can be done in half an hour down in the garage. There is something to be said to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty but get them dirty? Just to save $ 20 (or less) while giving up your Sunday afternoon? No thanks.

Be smart about DIY

Saving money is not the only reason for home improvement. Looking at a well painted wall or setting up a surveillance camera system can be a legitimate feeling of success. Someone will do it if you pay them, but why not learn how to do it yourself?

On the other hand, you have to know when to say when. Certain areas, such as wiring and electrical work, are only suitable for real experts for safety reasons. Other tasks, such as changing the oil, are simply not worth the effort because it is faster and cheaper if someone else does it.

With these and all other potential DIY projects around the house, there always has to be some calculation. Risk vs. Yield vs. Savings vs. Time vs. several other factors. The choice is yours – but use common sense and remember to consider everything before deciding on a path.
