What is the standard table height (the types of tables and chair heights)

If we are looking for variety, we can always install a table with dimensions and shapes that is different from the conventional ones. In the same way, however, you need to know the standard table height to make a decision.

The world of tables is very diverse. We can install one that resembles a bar style, or something a little more daring with a table that resembles that of a reception. Regardless of our style, we should consider the table height in order to purchase the chairs and that they are comfortable to use.

In the past, all of these options were limited and had a standard height. However, new trends have meant that furniture often has different heights, which leads to greater personalization of the environment.

If we have limited space in our dining room or kitchen, don’t worry, as the traditional options of round or square tables can also be transported to a modern design. If you are thinking of remodeling, we will give you some options and advice on the dimensions of the tables and chairs.

Standard table height – The different environments

Depending on the area and the use they have, the chairs and tables can be of different heights. However, it is common to find the complete pair, that is, tables and chairs that complement each other so that people have enough space on their lap.

There are a few rules that we can follow to stay within the standard that are always good to follow when looking for something unique.

Table for a formal / informal kitchen

The table used for a standard kitchen (or dining room) has a height between 28 and 30 inches measured from the floor. When looking for a formal style, the higher the table, the better. So we recommend that you get closer to 30 inches. Informal tables are usually kept at 29 inches.

There is a golden rule for determining the height of the chair. These should be 12 inches between the seat and the table to allow the legs to move comfortably so that they are approximately 18 inches high. It is also important to leave at least 7 inches between the table and the arm of the seat.

For stools, the standard table height is usually between 24 and 30 inches, but it depends entirely on the style of the table.

The chair also has a width

The chairs must have a minimum width both in the area in which we will be sitting and in the surrounding area so that they are not uncomfortable to use. When it comes to dining rooms, the chairs are usually between 16 and 20 inches wide, but we need to add at least 6 inches of girth to the sides so that guests don’t hit the elbows.

You also need to leave 36 inches of free space behind the chairs so other people can walk easily.

Finally, when we place chairs for rectangular tables, chairs that are on the thin ends should have 12 inches free instead of 6 inches.

Standard heights for kitchen worktops

This is the furniture in which the drawers are located and which we will work on in the kitchen. These are important kitchen table heights as we have both the side and central countertops on the island.

Typically these pieces measure 36 inches from the floor. As a rule, the table that separates the kitchen from the dining room is slightly lower than the rest of the furniture, especially in older houses.

It’s time to fill the counter table with stools

These small islands in the kitchen that serve as a table are better accompanied by stools than traditional chairs. The stools have a standard seat height of 24 inches measured from the floor.

As with the dining room chairs, we need to leave a significant distance between the table and between the stools so that people can use them easily (also with the advantage that many modern stools offer to be able to rotate around their axis).

A unique touch with a bar style table

When we talk about the standard table height, we cannot miss the canteen style. If we are looking for the full package, the bar counters are 42 inches high which allows full interaction for the bartender and customer. At home, we can choose the reduced version of 36 inches or even a mix between the two parts to get a better effect.

The complement? A bar stool

Like the exaggerated height of the table, the bar stools are large. The average height is similar to that of a dining table and is between 28 and 30 inches. We have to take into account the necessary width for their installation, which is very similar to that previously discussed.

A bar stool is generally characterized by the lack of armrests and backrests, which facilitates access from any direction.

A business environment with the desk

Although there is a standard for this type of furniture, we have to be very careful about what we need as a user. Not because it’s a standard, it means it’s ergonomic for us.

Most office furniture is suitable for people with heights between 173 and 178 cm. That is why it is normal to get desks 28 to 30 inches high and chairs with a seat between 16 and 21 inches.

There are currently technological options that can be adapted to different body textures, such as: B. adjustable desks.

Complement with the right chair

The office chairs are a little more freely dimensioned. The average chair dimensions for this are simply within limits. In this way, the height is between 16 and 20 inches, the width between 19 and 21.63 inches and the depth between 15.75 and 18.5 inches. These measures prevent support.

The modest options are coffee tables

The coffee tables are mostly a decorative alternative to complete the furniture of the rooms. These are perfect for placing other decorations or in some cases for placing drinks.

The height of the coffee tables depends on the height of the seats in the room. In other words, the sofa shows us how high we can put a table. In this way, the standard coffee table (in front of the largest sofa) has a height that corresponds to the seat of the sofa and is usually between 16 and 18 inches.

When setting it up, make sure that nobody has to go out of their way to remove a mug from the table while you are sitting on the sofa and that there is enough space to walk.

In addition, we have the auxiliary tables of the rooms that easily exceed the height of the coffee tables. These are smaller in width and depth, but allow direct access from the armrest of the sofa. It is common to find them between 22 and 26 inches tall.

These little tables that save our lives by storing everything we don’t need while sleeping must be at the same height as our mattress for maximum comfort. The standard table height is 21 to 28 inches (this is a big variation as it ultimately depends on the type of mattress we have).

A buffet table, an entrance table, among other things, has to adapt to an average of the users, although these are not used as often as the others. At the very least, an adult should be able to access the top without resorting to any type of support or having to bend down.

This way it is recommended that they are between 28 and 34 inches high (we have given the height of the console table as this is a pretty different table option).
